Quotation

He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that we cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God. - Aeschylus

Ode to Mothers

For Mother's Day...

Ode to Mothers

A mother’s womb is the place
All God’s children first find life.
In a mother’s warm embrace
All His children first find love.

From a mother’s sweet laugh
All God’s children first find joy.
With a mother’s kind support
All His children first find care.

A mother’s hand is the place
All God’s children hold the life.
In a mother’s sad teary eye
All His children’s hearts do die.

From a mother’s strong will
All God’s children see strength.
With a mother’s true love
All His children seek the truth.

A mother’s home is the place
All God’s children know safety.
In a mother’s long providence
All His children grow fruitfully.

From a mother’s hard work
All God’s children learn to act.
With a mother’s education
All His children become wise.

A mother’s heart is the place
God places the necessary faith.
In a mother’s hope and love
God brings the world to peace.

Note: This was composed several years ago, and like many of my poems, a variety of lyrical devices are used, in this case to convey the goodness and power of motherhood.  It was written as an ode in the English sense, not in the classical Greek sense.
